Rivers State House of Assembly Tuesday, proposed a bill to formally convert Rivers State College of Arts and Science, RIVCAS, to a Polytechnic.
The bill, tagged: “The Port Harcourt Polytechnic Bill, 2016”, was accompanied by a letter from the state Governor, Barr Nyesom Wike to the House, seeking consideration, which was read by the Deputy
Speaker, Hon Marshall Uwom who presided over the sitting.
Presenting the bill during plenary, House Leader, Hon Martin Amaewhule stated that when passed, the name of the institution will be called The Port Harcourt Polytechnic, Rumuola.
He further stated that all staff and property of RIVCAS will be transferred to the Polytechnic when the law becomes operational.
The bill read in part: “The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), a principal organ of the Federal Ministry of Education established by the National Board for Technical Education Act 1977
(Chapter 9 of the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004) which is responsible for all aspects of technical and vocational education in Nigeria (including accreditation) outside university education, had granted accreditation to some courses and programmes of the Rivers State College of Arts and Science with effect from October 1, 2006 and thereafter granted the College institutional accreditation as Polytechnic…
