Rivers Assembly proposes Bill to convert RIVCAS to polytechnic

Rivers State House of Assembly Tuesday, proposed a bill to for­mally convert Rivers State College of Arts and Science, RIVCAS, to a Polytechnic.
The bill, tagged: “The Port Harcourt Polytechnic Bill, 2016”, was accompanied by a letter from the state Gov­ernor, Barr Nyesom Wike to the House, seeking consider­ation, which was read by the Deputy
Speaker, Hon Marshall Uwom who presided over the sitting.
Presenting the bill dur­ing plenary, House Leader, Hon Martin Amaewhule stated that when passed, the name of the institution will be called The Port Harcourt Polytechnic, Rumuola.
He further stated that all staff and property of RIV­CAS will be transferred to the Polytechnic when the law becomes operational.
The bill read in part: “The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), a prin­cipal organ of the Federal Ministry of Education estab­lished by the National Board for Technical Education Act 1977
(Chapter 9 of the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004) which is responsible for all aspects of technical and vocational education in Nigeria (including accredi­tation) outside university education, had granted ac­creditation to some courses and programmes of the Riv­ers State College of Arts and Science with effect from Oc­tober 1, 2006 and thereafter granted the College institu­tional accreditation as Poly­technic…
