Flood threatens 10 Anambra communities

Except urgent steps are taken by both the Federal and the Anambra State Governments, 10 communities in Anambra East and Anambra West Local government areas may be swept away by flood.
Already, the waterways are blocked by water hyacinth which makes it impossible for speed boats to travel on the affected communities.
The situation has compelled the Association of Anambra State Town Unions to call on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to assist in clearing the waterways of riverine areas in Anambra East and Anambra West councils of water hyacinth to enable them evacuate to upland areas.
ASATU made the appeal during its September monthly general meeting at the association’s Secretariat.
The water hyacinth covers a stretch of some 40km on the Ezichi /Oda Rivers waterways from Eziagulu Otu Aguleri through other coastal communities of Mmiata Anam, Umuoba Abegbu Anam , Iyiora Anam to Umueze Anam.
According to the National President of ASATU, Dr JAP Okolo the people could not come out because of the inability of boats to move on the weeds which have taken over waterways.
He gave the names of the troubled communities as Eziagulu-Otu Aguleri, Mmiata Anam, Umuoba Abagbu, Iyiora Anam and Umueze Anam.
“People of Anambra East and West cannot come out and they need the intervention of the SEMA and NEMA to be able to be evacuated.
ASATU declared its support for the zoning of the governor in Anambra State to the North Senatorial District zone in the 2017 gubernatorial election to reduce tension in the polity.
