Trump's election: A post-mortem

Trump's election: A post-mortem

The world headlines were being dominated by the American election. The world cannot lose interest in who becomes the next American president. Yes, it is the Americans’ election, but their choice could be world’s problem especially if it goes to the wrong candidate. And it seems Americans elected a man that could pose a problem to world’s economic and social order. If Trump can live up to his campaign rhetoric, he can ignite instability around the globe. But America is a nation with very strong institutions and a bureaucracy that can tame a leader from exhibiting excesses of power. America operates policy templates protected by laws that are difficult to change. Trump is aware of these and as the president elect he has toned down even on Obamacare!
Why the world is against Trump
In his campaign rhetoric, Trump promoted racism, repudiated treaties, mocked women and the disabled, insulted establishment and made nonsense of American values. Trump, unless he changes, will be a terrible leader of a nation the rest of the world looks up to for leadership. He will be commander in chief of the most powerful military in the world, with control of nuclear weapons at his fingertips. The world disagrees with Trump on immigration, environment, trade, equality, race and prejudice.
Why then did the Americans vote Trump
Americans voted for Trump but they equally voted for Hilary with even more votes. Trump was a beneficiary of electoral votes which himself had condemned in 2012. If democracy is about majority votes, why did American election deny Hilary Clinton victory even as she won more votes than Donald Trump? Why deny the majority of Americans their chosen candidate in the name of electoral votes? Donald Trump himself had in 2012 called electoral college vote “a disaster for a democracy “. Little did he know he will become the unlikely beneficiary of an electoral system that allows a candidate to win the race without winning over the most votes?
Why the electoral college votes?
No one explained it better than Jonathan Mahler. He said that “a variety of factors informed the creation of the Electoral College, which apportions a fixed number of votes to different states based on the size of their populations. The founding fathers sought to ensure that residents in states with smaller populations were not ignored. And in an era that predated mass media and even political parties, they were concerned that average Americans would lack enough information about the candidates to make intelligent choices. So informed “electors” would stand in for them. Above all, some historians point to the critical role that slavery played in the formation of the system. Southern delegates to the 1787 Constitutional Convention, most prominently James Madison of Virginia, were concerned that their constituents would be outnumbered by Northerners. The Three-Fifths Compromise, however, allowed states to count each slave as three-fifths of a person — enough, at the time, to ensure a Southern majority in presidential race”
Trump will make or mar his presidency
Trump needs to be extremely careful as a president. The Republican establishment that controls the Congress don’t like him one bit and so are the Democrats, because of his unpredictable and impulsive behavior. They prefer Vice President Pence, a conservative, down to earth party man that can be controlled. Very soon as predicted by Alan Litchman, the person that accurately predicted Trump win, Donald will commit a breach that involves national security or economic crime that benefits his vast business interests and have himself removed from office.
What was the protest about in US?
The election was not rigged. Those demonstrators should blame themselves for not going out to vote for Hilary Clinton. Donald Trump campaigned tenaciously and targeted rural middle class Americans that are fed up with Obama’s economic policy. They braved the odds and left their homes as early as 5am and waited for 7 hours to vote for him. On the other hand Hilary Clinton targeted rich, highly educated lazy American women, the largest demographic group, that could not make the sacrifices to endure the pains of voting. At the end it was actual votes that counted, not intentions and crowd noises.
The role of FBI
After its report on Hilary’s email few days to voting one is wont to know if the FBI was neutral in the election. Everyone knew Clinton lost momentum after the second letter. Trump himself, the ultimate beneficiary of the second letter, was full of praises for James Comey. Hilary herself told her donors that it was Comey that did her in, inplausible as it seemed, she still had a point.
Role of racism in the election
Most people believe it was racist whites that turned against Hilary Clinton, forgetting that it was a contest between an all white’s candidates. Trump made some racists remarks but never made policy statement that would promote racism in America. It was also instructive to note that it was the same White population that massively voted Obama twice against white contenders. Those Whites that made Trump presidency possible did it for economic reasons.
Obama and his legacy
History will judge Obama at a proper time. Trump said Obama will go down as the worst president that led America and Obama replied that at least he was going down as a president. The truth remains that Obama rescued America from crisis, ended recession, created jobs, ended America’s wars and created Obamacare for American poor. Later, meeting Obama for the first time, Trump called him a very good man he may seek advice from in the future.
Meanwhile in Nigeria
If indeed FG paid Boko Haram $13m to secure the release of Chibok girls, it has committed an act of treason against the Nigerian nation. Reports are everywhere within intelligence circles that Boko Haram used the money to buy heavy weapons that gave current impetus to their insurgency against the Nigerian military. The army has lost and is still losing men in the battlefield. How could Buhari allow such a thing to happen, knowing fully well that those Boko Haram commanders released, and money paid to them, will come back to take more Nigerian lives? This is the tragedy we sought
