The Federal Government has given reason for appointing Dr Wale Babalakin, as the head of its 16-member team that is saddled with the responsibilities of renegotiating agreements earlier reached with staff unions in the federal-owned universities, colleges of education and polytechnics.
Babalakin’s appointment, according to the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, was hinged on his previous performance as the head of implementation committee of the 2009 agreement reached the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) when he was a pro-chancellor.
In a statement made available to The AUTHORITY, at the weekend by the Director of Press, Ministry of Education, Mrs Chineye Ihuoma, the negotiating team was inaugurated by President Muhammadu Buhari with a view to engendering sustainable peace and industrial harmony in tertiary institutions.
Apart from ASUU, the re-negotiation team will also dialogue with the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), among others.
Members of the team include Dr. Wale Babalakin, Chairman; Prof. M.M. Jibril, Prof Nimi Briggs, Senator Gbemisola Saraki, Prince Alex Mbata, and Arc. Lawrence Ngbale.
Others include Prof. Olufemi Bamiro, representatives of ministries of education, Finance, Justice, Labour and Employment; Budget and National Planning as well as representatives of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.
