A 10-man FC Ifeanyi Ubah defeated Enugu Rangers to emerge champions of the Charity Cup yesterday, thus starting the new season on a promising note.
The Nigeria Federation Cup champions, who will fly the country's flag in the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup defeated the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, Enugu Rangers 4-3 on penalty shootout.
The Charity Cup match which is staged between the winners of the 2015/2016 Nigeria Premier Football League and the Federation Cup winners served as a curtain raiser for the 2016/2017 season which kicks off this weekend across the country.
In the 33rd minute, Ghanaian defender of Ifeanyi Ubah Kojo Bah was sent off after his second booking for a late tackle.
The Nnewi outfit suffered further setback when captain Olamilekan Adeleye was forced by injury to give way to Stephen Eze.
The match which ended goalless at regulation time saw Rangers struggling to contain the more enterprising Anambra Warriors, despite their numerical strength.
While Rangers dominated the first half, the Amambra Warriors came out stronger at the second half even with one man down.
Both sides paraded their best eleven squad as the game was also used to put final touches to their 2016/2017 NPFL opener this weekend.
While Ranger will represent Nigeria at the 2017 CAF champions league, FC Ifeanyi Ubah will fly Nigeria's flag in the Confederation Cup along with Wikki Tourists of Bauchi.
