As part of activities marking his 2016 Christmas celebration with the inmates of Onitsha Federal Prison, the Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev Valerian Maduka Okeke, blessed the proposed site for the Onitsha Federal Prison Skills Acquisition Centre.
Performing the ceremony before Priests of the Archdiocese, prisons administrators and other dignitaries, Archbishop Okeke said the centre was to make the inmates useful citizens upon completion of their jail terms and that their stay in the prison would not be wasted.
“We want erect a skills acquisition centre here for you, the inmates. We hope that it will be completed latest by December, 2017. Our intention is that while you are here, the time is not wasted but that after your stay here, you will come out better and richer citizens.
“You will leave here, go into the society and help others to be better citizens because, by the time you leave here, you shall have become better citizens”, he said.
He said the Centre would have seven departments comprising tailoring, tiling, carpentry, painting, electrical and wiring, as well as computer section.
“Also, the Centre will house a lecture hall for GCE, NECO, WAEC and JAMB, as well as Open University where inmates can get their Bachelors, Master’s and Doctorate Degrees”, he added.
