As authoritative as The AUTHORITY

As authoritative as The AUTHORITY

Yesterday, Thursday January 26, 2017 was a media festival, our festival. It was a day set aside by the Management and Staff of The AUTHORITY Media and Publications Limited, publishers of The AUTHORITY Daily, The AUTHORITY On Sunday and The AUTHORITY On Saturday, to celebrate Nigerians who, in our estimation, had braced the bar in different layers of human endeavours. The list parades a galaxy of stars and supreme achievers, goal-getters and Titans who could squeeze water out of stones in their respective fields and areas of primary assignment in 2016. Led by His Excellency, (Barr.) Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, the undaunting, courageous and hardworking Governor of Rivers State, the recipients are men and women of substance and organizations of no mean reputations. Others include Their Excellencies Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state, Prof. Benedict Ayade of Cross River state, Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Senator Dino Melaye, Hon. (Mrs.) Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai COAS, Dr. Maikanti Kacalla Baru GMD NNPC, Chief (Dr.) Alexander Chika Okafor, Tony Ojobo, Phyno the artist and other organizations like Fidelity Bank, Africa Independent Television, AIT and SUNTRUST Bank Limited.
In fact, it was a delectable spectacle as a multitude of compatriots of the media community in Nigeria and the society at large converged on the Yar?Adua Centre in Abuja to celebrate these uncommon achievers. It was indeed, a bacchanal intellectual feast, a monumental saturnalia. There were reverberations of a whole musical ensemble whose bewildering repertoire gave a most coherent and symphonic auditory report. Somnolent, hibernating musical instruments were woken dutifully from their slumber. To their antiphonal gaiety and musical richness, responded a powerful gyration of dancing souls whose intricate footwork and swaying, supple bodies took hostage the mind and the subliminal. In attendance was an impressive array of media men, politicians led by Chief Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife (Okwadike), the Harvard-trained quintessential economist, politician and public intellectual. Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), the maverick human rights activist and public commentator was the Keynote speaker.
The event announced The AUTHORITY newspaper as a publication of consequence. In a fundamental and with affirmative sense, the paper has altered the intellectual content and nomenclature of Nigerian journalism. For a publication that debuted in October 2015, in a dramatic style, a brand that is proudly Nigerian, the paper promises to piously restate, zealously redefine and conscientiously redelineate the topography of the Nigerian print journalism in all ramifications and recover the long cherished but now lost ideals and traditions of journalistic practice. In just one year on the newsstands, and with patriotic zeal, the paper has invested in the public interest with an uncommon passion for integrity, accountability, transparency and good governance and the rule of law. Within this period, The AUTHORITY has assumed the toga of the veritable tribune of the Nigerian people, the custodian of public morality, the treasurer of our plural cultures, mores and traditions and the repository of balanced and investigative journalism.
On every issue of national significance, The AUTHORITY has tried to be independently neutral and yet unashamedly biased towards the public good, articulate and yet endowing and lending the people a powerful voice of their own, objective and yet unafraid of the truth even when it hurts. The paper has tried to accommodate a carnival of multiple and diverse voices and opinions but has striven to make the compelling and competing voices coherent, clear and capable of contributing to the ever brimming , never receding public discourse for the public good. At the AUTHORITY, we believe that it is one desire to freshen public debate , stimulate patriotic fervour and catalyze national development with the quality and integrity of our intellectual energies and compelling parliamentary language. In this regard, our style has always been racy as it is populist, our vision nationalistic as it is Afrocentric and our deposition uncompromising on matters of national unity and the public good.
Since, the past one year, we have tried to applaud transparency and accountability in public and private life, good corporate governance, freedom of speech and enforcement of other fundamental human rights and freedoms of the people for a fulfilled and happy society. The AUTHORITY Awards for Excellence and Good Governance is in fulfillment of our cherished template on Page Three of our paper, The AUTHORITY ICON, which is dedicated to celebrating Nigerians and shaping our world. While it is customary that our primary role is to inform, educate and to entertain, our most compelling function is to provide moral and spiritual leadership for our people. This means that we are set to take a plunge into more profound and apparently untrudded areas in developmental journalism. Consequently, our journalism is that which probes, engages and illuminates the complex circumstances underlying the human condition; and that which also questions the boundary between the eclipse of the public or national interest and the interest of the truth, hence our motto: Truth and Justice. The AUTHORITY is authoritative with zest and mysterious candour. We therefore invite all people of goodwill and conscience to join us in this noble and patriotic effort.
