Niger to commence school feeding programme

The Home Grown School Feeding (HGSF) programme which will see to the pro­vision of free food for pu­pils in nursery and primary schools will soon take-off in Niger State
The focal person for the social investment scheme in the state, Hon Afiniki Dauda, disclosed this in Minna recently during a two day stakeholders meet­ing aimed at developing a framework for the programme.
She said the programme is targeting all the pub­lic primary schools in the state and that the raw food items would be sourced lo­cally and prepared to meet high nutritional standard.
According to her, the need for the stakeholders meeting was also to devel­op a module for the pro­gramme to serve as a guide as well as help to review policy and implementation of the school feeding pro­gramme.
Hon Afiniki assured that the state will adhere strict­ly to the defined national guidelines and promise to collaborate with any inter­ested individual in order to achieve success for the pro­gramme implementation.
Giving other benefit asso­ciated with the programme, the focal person disclosed that the scheme would pro­vide employment opportu­nities to unemployed wom­en who will serve as vendors that will prepare the foods for the pupils.
