For being an astute entrepreneur who transformed his family’s businesses into a viable conglomerate creating thousands of jobs and also a notable philanthropist; for working assiduously to deepen democracy in his state, region and country, Senator Benjamin Chukwuemeka Uwajumogu is The AUTHORITY Icon.
He is an exemplary industrialist, philanthropist and politician who has positively impacted his soci­ety. Meet distinguished Senator Benjamin Chukwuemeka Uwajumogu, the ‘Odokara Ome of Igboland.’ The first son in a family of ten, he was born 51 years ago to the fa­mous Uwajumogu family of Umuihi family in Ihite/Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State. His father was a successful mer­chant. The affluence of his father did not in any way derail him from the path of perse­verance.
In 1970, he started his academic career at Library Avenue Primary School Umua­hia. Between 1976 and 1981, he attended Uboma Secondary School, Ikpejeree, and Boys’ High School.
His thirst for higher studies propelled him to enroll for a language course at Alli­ance Franaise, and University De Sorbonne, Paris 4th; graduating in 1982. Thereafter, he was admitted into the Schiller Interna­tional University, Paris, France, where he obtained an Associate Bachelor’s degree in International Relations. He later attended University of New Jersey, Jersey City, USA, and graduated in 1986 with a B.Sc. Political Science & Economics (Minor).
His various rigorous training and wealth of experience gathered from studying over­seas, equipped him strongly to take up the challenges of life, as the first son in a family of ten (10) especially, as it concerns the Done with schooling, he effectively anchored the vast family businesses comprising haulage, hospitality, fish farming, road consultancy, construction & management among others - effectively repositioning and re-strength­ened the entrepreneurial empire.
He single-underhandedly erected a new church building for his home church - the Saviours Evangelical Church Umuihi, where he is a member of the Board of Trustees. As a philanthropist, he has lifted many people from poverty to prosperity, without a highly detribalized approach. .
As an Industrialist, he has served as board member of several private and public con­cerns. As a member of the Nigeria Shippers’ Council, he was appointed into a special com­mittee, and his invaluable contributions to the work of that committee led to revamped and efficient Nigeria Shippers’ Council.
In the political arena, in 1990, at the young age of 25, he became the pioneer chairman of the then Social Democratic Party (SDP) for Ihitte/Uboma LGA. He was appointed the Zonal Chairman of the party for Okigwe Zone and further served as a member of the South East Co-ordinating Committee for ‘Hope 93,’ the campaign organization of MKO Abiola.
In 2011, he was elected member represent­ing Ihitte-Uboma state constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly, emerging as the House Speaker on inauguration, a position he held till his tenure expired in 2015.
In 2015, he was elected Senator to represent Imo North Senatorial District (Okigwe Zone) in the 8th Senate of the National Assembly.
He has received numerous recognitions and awards for his goodwill and societal impact.
He has also received over twenty chief­taincy titles across Igbo land, amongst them are the “Odokara Ome” and “Ogbuhuru Uzo Okigwe” (meaning one who brings develop­ment) conferred on him by the traditional rulers in Okigwe Zone.
He is married to Elleen, a union blessed with three lovely children.
