In a bid to sanitize the Nigeria premier basketball league ahead of the kick off new season next month, the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) has announced that henceforth players billed to represent any team in the League must be duly registered with the Federation by their various teams.
NBBF spokesman, Patrick Omorodion, who disclosed this to The AUTHORITY, said the days of impunity perpetrated by clubs are over as the Federation is ready to penalize clubs that go against the directive.
He wondered how players can be recruited from the "roadside" by clubs to prosecute their matches, thereby denying both the player and NBBF due benefits.
"I wish to bring it to your notice that the Federation has agreed that starting from this year, every basketball team that will compete in the league must have their players duly registered with it before the start of the season. This is to ensure that the players and the Federation get full remuneration for services rendered.
"When these players are giving a sense of belonging, it will spur them to action and bring out the best in them, which can be useful to them individually or the nation.
"I thank God that we have got some corporate organizations who are willing to partner with us in terms of sponsorship. So we are set to reorganize the league in a way that those who invested their money will have real value for it, while also taking the sport to greater heights," he concluded.
