The worst days may be ahead for some detained leaders of the Rivers State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), if the federal authorities succeed in their alleged plot against them.
Their ordeals are traced to the just-concluded rerun election in Etche Local Government Area where the PDP defeated the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement it issued on Monday, the PDP said that information at its disposal revealed secret plans to file incriminating charges against its Publicity Secretary, Samuel Nwanosike, Roland Sekibo, Odiari Princewill and other chieftains of the party who were unlawfully arrested by the military during last Saturday’s re-run election in Etche council.
Shocked by the desperation of some PDP opponents who want Nwanosike silenced by all means, the State PDP Chairman, Mr. Felix Obuah, said that his (Nwanosike) and other detainees’ transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) was influenced by a well-known APC chieftain in the state who had always wanted Nwanosike dead.
The statement was signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the PDP Chairman, Mr. Jerry Needam.
He insisted that the PDP chieftains, officials had legally accredited for the election and were innocent of any offence being levelled against them by security agencies.
Obuah believes that the dust being thrown into the eyes of the investigating police officers is borne out of “hate and bitterness against the arrested PDP chieftains and the singular desire to find cause to nail Mr. Nwanosike for refusing the APC to carry out their sinister plans, especially in the Rivers East Senatorial District during the elections.
He said: “Even as they are being illegally detained under inhuman conditions at the State CID, pressures are being mounted on the security men to transfer them to Abuja in order to deny them further access to their families.
“We insist that Mr. Samuel Nwanosike and the three others are innocent and were officially in Etche during the rerun election as our party agents for the purpose of monitoring the election and duly acted within the ambit of the law,” Obuah said.
Meanwhile, the Ahmed Makarfi group of the PDP has provided “evidence” that shows that APC is behind the party’s crisis.
At a press conference in Abuja on Monday, the spokesperson of the faction, Mr. Dayo Adeyeye, said the actions of some leaders of the APC had buttressed its allegations of instigating the crisis in the PDP.
He said: “We have stated several times that the APC has its hand deep in the PDP crisis. There is no doubt that Sheriff’s activities against the PDP are being aided and abated by the APC.
“For the record, just last week, the governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, gave unsolicited advice that we should support Senator Sheriff. That is one instance of their meddlesomeness in the PDP affairs.
“No doubt that Okorocha and Co are happy that their man won at the Appeal Court but very much afraid that he could lose at the Supreme Court. Also, we have it on good authority that the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, has deployed his former Abuja Liaison Officer who was a former Intermediate Officer of the party, Mr. John Enebeli, among others, to lure some members of staff in support of Senator Sheriff by promising them huge sums of money to offset their outstanding allowances,” Adeyeye stated.
