Apo six: Court frees Police Chief, convicts two cops over killings of Igbo traders

 
An Abuja High Court on Thursday discharged and acquitted Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Danjuma Ibrahim for the death of six Igbo traders in Abuja on June 7, 2005. The court, however, convicted and sentenced to death two cops, Ezekiel Acheneje and Emmanuel Baba who are the 4th and 5th defendants respectively in the suit for the gruesome murder of Anthony Nwokike and Tina Arebun out of the six Igbo traders who were killed at Gimbiya Street at Garki, Abuja. Delivery his verdict in the matter today, the trial judge, Justice Ishaq Bello held that the prosecution failed to establish a case of conspiracy and culpable homicide against Danjuma, the 3rd and 6 defendants as testimonies of the prosecution witnesses were contradictory. Specifically, the Federal Government had charged Ibrahim [1st defendant], along with Othman Abdulsalam [at large], Nicholas Zakaria, Ezekiel Acheneje, Emmanuel Baba and Sadiq Salami, 2nd to 6th defendants respectively, for “agreeing to do or cause to be done an illegal act and therefore conspired amongst yourself to commit felony to wit: Culpable Homicide Punishable with death by agreeing to kill.” Details later...
