A cleric, Mallam Saka Afolabi in Egbenta Community in Ovia North East local government area of Edo state has been murdered by unknown gunmen.
The incident which happened at the weekend crippled activities in the community as residents trooped out in large number to bemoan the elderly man.
The children of the Chief Imam of the community’s central mosque said they were going to the mosque for early morning prayers when some gunmen intercepted them, singled out their dad and shot him dead.
They alleged that their dad has been having a lingering crises over his cocoa plantation at Ehengbuda camp via Egbenta with one Ajitena Mauruf Adebayo who allegedly drove him out alleging that he was part of the gunmen that killed their father.
In a swift reaction, the accused person, Mr Ajitena Adebayo who in a telephone interview denied the allegation said he has been in Lagos State for some days.
He stressed that he received the news of the Imam’s death with rude shock pointing out that the case between him and the deceased is in court.
Adebayo said he would not stoop so low to murder when the case in court was going in his favour.
When contacted, the Edo State Police Commissioner, Mr Haliru Gwandu said the police has commenced full investigation into the matter as police will leave no stone unturned to ensure justice.
