The Chairman of the Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Felix Obuah, has praised Governor Nyesom Wike for unveiling a special amnesty package to contain cultist activities and militancy in the Ogoni area of the state.
Obuah commended Wike for his magnanimity to give the cultists a second chance, stressing that the move was the hallmark of good governance and sincere leadership by the governor.
He noted that the successes recorded in other parts of the state by similar amnesty programme had convinced all doubting Thomases, especially the opposition leaders in Ogoni that Wike meant well for them.
In a statement he issued in Port Harcourt on Monday, the PDP boss regretted that there would not have been need for the amnesty programme and the huge resources being devoted to it if the opposition politicians had not politicised the programme, insisting that it was the same cultists used by the opposition to rig the December 10, 2017 legislative election in Ogoni that has continued to disturb the peace of the land.
He also blamed the desperate opposition political office seekers for the resurgence of cultism in Ogoni, adding that they must be held accountable for the avoidable bloodshed in the area.
Obuah appealed to the Ogonis and their leaders, in particular, to prevail on their sons and wards who are cultists to take advantage of the opportunity offered by the state government to surrender their arms and key into the amnesty programme.
Also commending the efforts and contributions of the security agencies in complementing the efforts of the state government, Obuah said they should go ahead to consolidate the relative peace achieved by the amnesty programme and not to rest on their oars, saying the fight against crime must be an ongoing activity for there to be total calm, co-operation and harmony among sheds of opinions etc.
Obuah said the PDP leadership in the State will continue to preach and tread the path of peace and promote mutual co-existence in all parts of the State as a hallmark of exemplary leadership.
