Africa’s most decorated female table tennis star, Funke Oshonaike, has identified dearth of quality coaching and equipments as major challenges affecting the development of players in the country.
The Germany-based player who organized a coaching clinic for junior players in Lagos recently, was amazed at the quality exhibited by the players, which she noted was contrary to her projection.
“I am impressed with the quality of players that still abound in the country.” She noted that lack of coaching and dearth of equipment are the major challenges facing the players.
“I am thrilled by the raw talent of the players. I had thought that things had gone bad and that the country is lacking quality players. But after spending one week with the junior players, I was surprised with the quality of raw talents. My conclusion is that we are not lacking in talents. The only problem is getting the right coaching for these young players.
“These players are ready to work hard but they need support and encouragement from the coaches and this can motivate them to do well. A coach must be like a father and mother to the players and if all these are not there, there is nothing you can teach the players.
“Also coaches must understand that these are young players and you must let them have fun for them to enjoy what they are doing. But If you insist on being strict every time, they will be reluctant to learn and this is also another major factor,” she said.
