Gialuigi Buffon has revealed Juventus are hoping to avoid Atletico Madrid in today’s Champions League semi-final draw.
Alongside Real Madrid, the Serie A champions are arguably the favourites to lift the European title after knocking Barcelona out at the quarter-final stage on Wednesday evening.
But the Italian goalkeeper believes the reigning champions would be an easier opponent than Atletico, as Diego Simeone’s men are the only team not distracted by a domestic title fight.
‘Maybe it’s better to meet Monaco or Real, who will spend significant energy in the fight for the league,’ the 39-year-old said.
‘They would rotate less, compared to Atletico, who have a more defined position [in the table] and can manage themselves.’
Despite a long and stellar career at Juventus, Buffon is still yet to lift the coveted trophy but says his Juventus side can take a lot of confidence after shutting out Barcelona over two legs.
Their clean sheet at the Nou Camp, which came as a surprise to Buffon, means the Italian side are yet to concede from open play in this season’s Champions League and makes them the team to avoid for Atletico, Real and Monaco.
