The Federal Government has inaugurated the National Committee for the Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA) negotiations.
Inaugurating the committee in Abuja on Thursday, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah, said the team, would among other responsibilities, advise government on areas of negotiation on goods, investment, competition and intellectual property.
While also saying that the committee would also undertake analysis to ensure that the negotiations and emerging results approximate the goals set by the government, Enelamah said the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) would henceforth be part of the Nigerian negotiating team for the CFTA.
He said the trade negotiating committee would also identify opportunities and challenges facing the country in trade with other African countries, both intra and Inter-Regional Economic Communities (REC), and participate in the negotiations, as appropriate to modernize the Nigerian economy.
Members of the committee are drawn from Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment; Office of the Vice President; Ministry of Budget and National Planning; Ministry of Justice; Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ministry of Finance; Nigeria Customs Service, among others.
