Bauchi State Government has flagged-off the disbursement of the Federal Government’s social investment programme, Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP) by disbursing loans to beneficiaries.
Speaking at the flag-off of the loan disbursement at the banquet hall of the Government House, Bauchi, the state Governor Muhammad Abdullahi Abubakar said the GEEP loan programme is unique and important to the Bauchi state government’s quest to reduce poverty and enhance wealth creation amongst its citizens.
The Governor said the loan programme is being piloted in Bauchi Local Government and that “It is because of the importance with which we attached to GEEP that I have instructed the expansion of the programme to cover the rest of the 19 LGAs of the state”.
Also speaking, the coordinator of Pro-Poor Foundation who is also coordinating the loan scheme, Yunusa Gadai said GEEP is a federal government social investment programme that would assist small entrepreneurs to boost their businesses.
He said 140 billion naira was deposited with the Bank of Industry by the Federal Government for that purpose and that so far 40,000 people from Bauchi Local Area are earmarked to benefit from the programme.
According to Gafai, “the loan is for all Nigerians and it is meant for those that are already into small scale business that needs expansion. It is an interest free revolving loan that must have to be paid back for others to benefit too”.
Earlier speaking, the state focal person for Social Investment Programme, Alhaji Mansur Manu Soro, thanked the federal government for spearheading the GEEP loan scheme, describing it as an avenue to upscale cottage businesses and encourage savings amongst beneficiaries.
