Police battle 40 cult groups in Akwa Ibom

Despite its acclaimed lowest position on the crime in­dex of Nigeria, the police in Akwa Ibom State have said that they are up in arms against over 40 dead­ly cult groups threatening the peace and security of major towns in the state.
The state Police Com­missioner, Mr. Don Awu­nah, who disclosed this Wednesday during an in­teraction with journalists at the Police Headquar­ters, Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo, said that his com­mand has set up an anti-cultism unit to combat the menace.
Awunah said that the sidelines of a “show-of-force” operation by a com­bined detachment of se­curity agencies including the Army, Navy, Air Force, civil defence corps, and Nigerian prisons, which paraded the streets of Uyo, the state capital and other local government areas.
According to the police boss, intelligence reports indicate that over 40 cult groups were operating in the state, and that the deadly groups have high profile persons in the state as members.
He said that the police, under his command, have being collaborating with anti-cultists organisations on intelligence gathering and sensitisation cam­paigns aimed at ending the social vice and making culprits renounce cultism.
On the “show-of-force” parade by security agen­cies in the state, Awunah said that the operation was carried out to send signals to residents of the state that there was inter-secu­rity agencies cooperation to tackle all forms of crim­inalities in Akwa Ibom
