Chairman Senate Committee on Works, Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya has congratulated former Head of State and elder statesman, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), on his 75th birthday.
Senator Gaya in a statement he personally signed joined friends, family, admires and well wishers of the foremost general in celebrating the milestone in his life. The vice-president (Africa) of Inter- Parliamentary Union (IPU) noted that the life of the general has been marked by a distinguished career in the military and an outstanding role in the political history of Nigeria by dutifully and honestly ushering in the fourth republic. He described the former head of state as one of the few generals in the Nigerian army who rose to the top without holding political offices. “He held only command
and military positions, and has, in general, stayed out of the political limelight before becoming head of state,” the statement added.
The former Kano state governor said the stability in political arena of the country is a determined effort of the general.
He particularly mentioned the role played by General Abubakar during and after the 2015 election to ensure that there was smooth transition from one party to another first in the history of Nigeria. He said that the former head of state will be remembered whenever “Democracy Day” is marked in the African most populated country.
Gaya prayed for many more years, good health and Allah protection in the years ahead for the general.
Abubakar handed over power to former President Olusegun Obasanjo of the People’s Democratic Party PDP on May 29, 1999, to usher in the fourth Republic 18 years ago.
