As United Arab Emirates tries to smooth emerging tensions with Tunisia, demonstrations have been held in Tunis, over a decision to bar Tunisian women from boarding Emirates flights.
Tens of protestors camped outside the UAE embassy to show their dissatisfaction with that Emirates Airlines decision.
Spokesman for the Tunisian presidency has however dismissed allegations of a diplomatic crisis between the two Arab countries.
Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi has also weighed in on this controversy.
He held talks with his country’s Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui to find a way out of the simmering diplomatic tensions.
Currently, the government is seeking ways of transporting thousands of Tunisian women and girls stranded in Beirut and Abu Dhabi.
Tunisia is known to have progressive laws that protect women’s rights in the entire Arab world, and this latest incident is viewed by activists as an affront to these rights.
