From Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, Awka
Anglican Bishop of Awka diocese, Right Reverend Ephraim Chibuzor Ikeakor has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to hasten economic actions targeted at reducing the excruciating hunger and poverty in Nigeria.
Addressing newsmen on the New Year, Bishop Ibezim reminded President Buhari that without the common man suffering deprivation of all sorts including scarcity of fuel, there would be nobody to lead.
Bishop Ibezim reassured that God’s plan for Nigeria in 2018 is to make it a dwelling place for Nigerians even as he encouraged families that passed through difficulties in 2017 especially those who worked hard without salaries to hope on God.
He prayed God to help the President, Muhammadu Buhari to reduce the hunger in the land through policies that are people friendly.
The Awka Anglican Bishop appealed to the Church of God not to forget the poor in their midst even as he distributed hundreds of bags of rice , clothes and other largess to hundreds of widows in Mbaukwu and elsewhere.
He tasked Church leaders to continue to pray for the youths and government to provide enabling environment for youths to thrive and as well create employment opportunities even though youth unemployment is a global menace.
Right Reverend Ibezim tasked the Christendom to unite as people praying to one true living God in Heaven against evil, poor administration , Herdsmen menace and war against Christianity even though unity does not mean uniformity of doctrines . He challenged Christian leaders to eschew sowing seeds of disunity in the Church of God as in heaven , there is no church and God is one for all Christians irrespective creed or tribe.
The Anglican Bishop of Awka Diocese, as well at the Bishop’s court registered his displeasure over the untold hardship Christians were subjected to during the yuletide over fuel scarcity in the nation and called on President Muhammad Buhari and others concerned to do something urgent to ameliorate the sufferings of people.
Ibezim condemned the activities of herdsmen across the nation particularly in Benue state and Nasarawa among others and in the south east, especially the recent attack of Coscharis farm in Anaku, Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State where large acres of farm land were destroyed by the herdsmen.
According to the prelate, “it is not a good image for our country that fuel we produce in this country, citizens pay through the nose to get it.
“That is why we are calling on the President and relevant authorities to work hard and ensure that the fuel scarcity does not escalate to the new year.
“Herdsmen mayhem is becoming a reoccurring situation in this country and federal government seems not to be doing anything about it and this silence is the reason for several agitations in the country.
“There is need for this government to conduct a research on why people who have been leaving together are threatening to separate. Let them find out from grassroots why the nationwide agitations instead of this their idea of setting up one committee or the other and spending millions on them without implementing any part of their recommendations ” he said.
Bishop Ibezim also used the opportunity to pour encomium on the governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano on the area of security and good governance and charged him not to repent in providing democracy dividends on the people, saying that such is the reason for his re-election.
