As part of moves to further consolidate his presidential campaign, a group known as Lamido Presidency Project 2019, loyal to former Jigawa state governor, Dr. Sule Lamido, has donated various food and household items worth millions of Naira to inmates of Kano Central prison.
The spokesman of the group, Comrade Samuel Jerry also told journalists in Kano on Wednesday that the group has concluded plans to engage in nation-wide free-prisoners campaign.
According to him, the group would be sponsoring the release of prisoners who are unable to pay their fines, including those who committed minor and bailable offences.
He added that the gesture was part of Dr. Sule Lamido’s widow’s mite to prisoners who are passing through untold hardship in the country.
According to him, “it was a move to show love and care to the prisoners who are part and parcel of the society, but are passing through a series of neglect and abandonment due to their present condition.”
He further stated that the donations were made on behalf of Dr. Sule Lamido who is among those jostling to become president of Nigeria in 2019 presidential election.
Also speaking, the Assistant Secretary of the Lamido Presidency Project 2019, Comrade Abdullahi Garba said the project is aimed at alleviating the lives of inmates and urged them to learn from their stay in detention and become good citizens.
He told the management of the prison that they were there to render little assistance in anticipation of more humanitarian services to come and explained that the call for the support of inmates in Nigeria was something they felt a duty for every one to respond to.
He added that very soon, Lamido will embark on the tour of facilitating inmates across the 36 states, through payment fines for those unable to pay, as well as those who were imprisoned for minor offences.
The Deputy Controller in-charge of the Kano Central prison, Alhaji Ubale Haruna said the materials which included mattresses, bags of rice, pomades soap, Vaseline and other items will be distributed to the inmates and thanked the group for being kind to the inmates.
He said many people have been coming as individuals and groups to assist and urged the society to emulate the good work the group has done.
