From Blessing Ibunge, Port Harcourt
An indigenous oil company based in Rivers State, Belemaoil Producing Limited, has awarded scholarships to 374 to students of its host communities.
The beneficiaries include 78 postgraduate, 175 undergraduate and 121 post-primary school students.
The company said that the gesture was part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) under the NNPC/Belemaoil Joint Venture.
At the official handing over of the cheques to beneficiaries in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, the Founder/President of Belemaoil Producing Ltd, Mr. Jack-Rich Tein Jr, stated that the scholarships were not a display of wealth, but in recognition of the important role education plays in the lives of the youths and the future of the host communities.
He explained that the scholarships were worth over N100million annually, pointing out that they were both for students in Nigerian schools and abroad.
Tein said: “We are here not just to celebrate the success that has come to them, but to also honour the privilege given to us as a company to serve. And we recognise very importantly that if you joke with education, you are joking with the future and if you fail to grab these young ones who have the enthusiasm and flair to pursue their academic dream, you are limiting the unravelling of future opportunities that they would have used to grow themselves and the society.”
