He is an academic of great repute; one of the many Nigerians who have broken into the world stage in his chosen area. He is world acclaimed mathematician, Professor Aderemi Oluyomi Kuku. Prof Kuku was born on March 20, 1941. He graduated with B. Sc (Special Honours) in Mathematics from the University of London in 1965. In 1968, he bagged an M. Sc in the same Mathematics from the University of Ibadan and capped it up with a Ph. D from the same UI three years later. Prof Kuku has devoted all his working career to Mathematics from teaching to research and to motivating young people most of whom see the subject of a monster. He was Assistant Lecturer, University of Ife, Nigeria, 1965-67; Lecturer University of Ife, 1967-68; Lecturer/Senior Lecturer and Reader in Mathematics, Univ. of Ibadan, Nigeria (1968-1980). Kuku crowned his distinguished teaching career when he was made Professor of Mathematics, Univ. of Ibadan in 1982 and he remained with UI till 2002.

Claytor Endowed Professor of Mathematics, Grambling State University, Grambling, USA., President of the African Mathematical Union for nine years 1986-1995 and President of the African Academy of Sciences, 2014-2017. He is also currently a Distinguished Professor of Mathematics, National Mathematical Centre, Abuja, Nigeria where he has spent a lot of his time trying to motivate young Nigerians to conquer the phobia on Mathematics.

He also holds the position of Professor of Mathematics, International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) Trieste, Italy. (a United Nations Research Centre in Mathematics and Physics under UNESCO) 1995-2003, a position he relinquished on attaining the UNESCO mandatory age of 62.

He has taught Calculus, Real and complex Analysis Algebra (Linear and Abstract), Topology, and Geometry at undergraduate and beginning Graduate levels.
He has written a book “Abstract Algebra” suitable for undergraduate and beginning graduate levels and has also taught graduate courses on various topics including Homological algebra, Algebraic Topology, Algebraic Number theory, Representation Theory, Algebraic K-theory, Category theory, Algebraic Geometry, and Non-commutative Geometry.
He has taught Pre-Calculus, Calculus III, Modern Algebra I & II Introduction to Topology, Topics in Mathematics I.

Prof Kuku is among the few prophets honoured at home. His home state, Ogun, has honoured him with the Ogun state Special Merit Award in 1987. In 2009, Nigeria honoured him with the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM), the Highest Academic Honors. In far away China, an “International Conference on Algebraic K-theory and It’s Applications” was organized in his honour to mark his 70th birthday. The event took place at the Nanjing University, China. In 1993, he was honoured with the Distinguished Achievement Award, USA National Association of Mathematicians (1993). Having identified the worth of Kuku, the United States of America lured him away classifying him among Africans of special skill and capacity for which he was granted American citizenship. But at every opportunity he has, he is at home, at the National Mathematical Centre, Abuja to help promote the study of Mathematics which he believes is key to Nigeria’s scientific and technological development.
