Winners of Young Nigerian Scientists award to meet Buhari- Onu

In a bid to promote sciences and innovation among young Nigerians, the winners of the 2018 national final examination of the 774 Young Nigerian Scientists’ Presidential Award will be presented to President Mohammadu Buhari next month.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu who disclosed this on Monday in Abuja at the final examination for this year’s award said the contest was organized to encourage young Nigerians to achieve their full potentials in the deployment of science, technology and innovation to drive the nation’s effort to promote economic growth and diversification.

According to him, those that excel at the end of the examination would be presented to Mr. President at the forthcoming Technology and Innovation Expo scheduled to hold at Eagle square in Abuja in March.

He revealed that the best among them will be rewarded with a cash prize of one million naira, while the second and third place winners will receive the sum of seven hundred and fifty thousand naira and five hundred thousand naira respectively.

To further encourage those who came out on top in their respective local government areas and states, Dr. Onu said that each of them present at the final event will receive a Laptop as a souvenir from the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology.

He added that the administration of President Mohammed Buhari is determined to ensure that Nigeria secure a bright future for her young ones to enable them release their creative energies and potentials make significant contributions to national development

“As young boys and girls who have shown amazing promise in science and technology, you must not let your dream die because it is in that Dream that a new Nigeria can be born. You can surpass the achievements of our forefathers and become great men and women of distinction who can help ensure that in no distant time from now, Nigeria can produce a Noble laureate in physics, Chemistry and medicine.

“I have no doubt in my mind that the seed we are sowing today will tomorrow enable Nigeria stimulate greater interest among our young ones to accept science, technology and innovation as a way of life”, the Minister added.

Earlier, the Director, Science and Technology Promotion, Mr. Ekanem Udo said the 774 Young Nigerian Scientists Presidential Award is an initiative of the Ministry geared at effectively encouraging and developing the interest of Nigerian youths in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI).
