For her significant contributions to the development of Nigeria, the Executive Vice Chairman of ENL Consortium Limited and Chairman, Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN), Dr. Vicky Haastrup, has emerged the Most Outstanding Terminal Operator of Year 2017.
AAAHaastrup, whose company operates Terminals C and D of the Lagos Port Complex, Apapa, was among the 27 recipients at the Independent Awards in Lagos, organised by Independent Newspapers.
AAAShe dedicated the awards to the companyas good, a?hardworking, committed and patriotic staff, who work day and night to ensure that ships are promptly discharged and cargoes delivered in good time to their owners.
AAAa?When we came into the port in 2006, the terminals were at ground zero; nothing was working. The equipment were not functional, there were endless ship queues even as touts called the shots. The morale of workers was at its lowest ebb.a?
AAAHowever, a?immediately we resumed duty, we turned the story around. Today, we have people who are proud to be called dockworkers because they now have good conditions of service.a?
AAAHowever, she lamented that while the reforms and concession programme have brought about a more efficient port systemAand also tripled governmentas revenue from the ports, the major challenge today is the dysfunctional Wharf Road and the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway.
AAAa?These roads are the major arteries of both the Apapa and Tincan Island ports. If these roads are given due attention by government, Nigerians will enjoy more benefits of ports concession.a?
