The Gusau emirate council in Zamfara has turbaned Rt Hon Edward Obasi, the current speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly as Sabbenin Gusau (meaning, Respectable) by the Emir of Gusau, Alhaji Ibrahim Bello.
The turbaning, according to the emir was in recognition of the dedication to duty of the speaker, coupled with his love, concern and understating among other things.
Rt Hon Edward who was in the state to attend the annual conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria was said to have received the honour when the delegation of the conference paid a courtesy call on the emir.
The emir explained that he was pleased over the way and manner with which the speaker, Rt Hon Edward conducts himself and urged other speakers to emulate him.
According to the emir who was flanked by the Enugu House speaker in company of other speakers at his palace, “In Nigeria, everyone is connected to the other irrespective of tribal, religious and political inclination.
“We are one”, continued the emir, disclosing that every Nigerian has the right to live in any part of it, and that everyone also deserves equal treatment whether a Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa and any other tribe as long as the root of that clan is in Nigeria.
Emir Bello also explained that God in His Infinite mercy created the people of different culture and religion at the same place ‘because that is how He wanted it to be, and nobody has the power to make any separation between us.
Speaking further, the emir stated that his emirate does not discriminate against any tribe, adding that “what we want you people to concentrate on is the development of our country”.
“We want you as our representatives to always talk on issues of national interest, issues that will strengthen the unity of our people across the nation”, he said, adding that Nigeria will continue to remain one forever.
In his remarks shortly after the turbanning, the new Sabbenin Gusau, Rt Hon Edward Obasi assured the emir of his loyalty to both the emir and the emirate.
The speaker who also doubles as the deputy chairman of the conference of speakers of the state legislatures in Nigeria also stated that he will never forget the gesture done to him by the emirate, and by extension, Zamfara State.
