Memories of ‘Omeiheukwu Super Cup’ lingers on in Oji River, Enugu state

MAURICE OKAFOR writes that the Chairman/Managing Director of ANBEEZ Services Ltd, an indigenous construction firm, Chief Engr Anayo Onwuegbu has continued to receive encomiums for initiating and sponsoring an annual football tournament in Oji River local government area of Enugu state.

The annual event which has succeeded in gingering unity among the various communities in Oji River which includes Achi – Agu, Achi – Uno, Akpugoeze, Awlaw, Inyi, Oji -River Urban and Ugwuoba, in addition provides a forum for discovering young football talents that abound in the area.

Many of the Youths, who watched the finals of the 2017 edition of the cup, played at Inyi Central mini stadium in the first week of January,2018, expressed their desire for some other wealthy individuals from the local government to establish a similar competition.

Chief Onwuegbu reiterated his commitment in the development of Nigerian football as a means of exposing talented local footballers and providing employment opportunities for several unemployed youths who abound in the country.

In a chat with sports writers, Engr Onwuegbu described football as a globally accepted unifying factor in as much as professional soccer has raised millionaires from among the down trodden.
The Authority South-East Post observed that the final match which was played between ‘Ugwu Inyi football club and ‘Agbada Inyi’ football club ended 2-1 in favour of Ugwu Inyi F.C. thus Ugwu Inyi F.C. carted home the coveted gold cup with the highest prize while Agbada Inyi F.C went home with the second prize. ‘Achi Agu’ F.C that emerged the third position won the third prize of the competition.

However, consolation prizes were given to the other Nine teams that participated in the 2017 Omeiheukwu Super cup tournament.
