The Federal Ministry of Science and Technology is to assist the Nigerian Army to upgrade its Institute of Technology and Environmental Science, Biu to a full-fledged University.
The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu stated this when the Committee to Upgrade the Institute to University visited him in Abuja.
According to a statement issued by the Ministrya��s Deputy Director Press, AbdulGaniyu Aminu, Onu said the Ministry will assist in the area of technical know-how, technology and institutional capacity to enable the proposed university stand on a firm footing.
He added that the present administration is giving currency to knowledge-based economy, pointing out that the proposed university was welcome development at this stage of the nationa��s development.
According to him, the Federal Government will continue to support any initiative that will enable Nigeria utilize science and technology to solve her problem.
He commended the military institution for keying into the on-going technological revolution and thinking ahead of its time.
With this kind of orientation of the military, Dr. Onu said Nigeria will in no time be self-sufficient and become an industrialA�A�A�hub in the foreseeable future.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Committee to upgrade the university, Major-Gen Mathias Efeobokhi that the university will serve as a solution centre for the technological and other operational problems of the Nigerian Army, the military and the nation.
He said that the institution is to create the critical mass required for research, innovation testing and development of military equipment in a 21stA�century setting.
According to him, a�?the University will facilitate the creation of the enabling environment that will facilitate the creation of the enabling environment that will enhance the acceleration, development and eventual production of modern military hardware in Nigeriaa�?.
Dr. Onu also at the event advocated for the use of mother tongue to teach science and technology in primary and secondary schools.
According to him, children understand faster when taught in their mothera��s tongue, he further added that teaching science in the English language constitutes a clog to effective discernment.
Dr. Onu disclosed that for the first time in the History of Nigeria, the Buhari administration has ensured that science and technology is the driving force of the nationa��s economy.
He further emphasized how science and technology is crucial in broadening the revenue for the government and individuals and pledged his support on major projects in the field to help in turning around the fortunes of Nigeria.
He further stressed the resolve of the current administration to make Nigeria self-reliant in all ramifications.
