Enugu APC set to conduct parallel state congress tomorrow

From Maurice Okafor, Enugu

There are indications that the unresolved crisis in the Enugu State chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) will boil down to the conduct of a parallel state congress in the state tomorrow.
The crisis within the State wing of the party had led to the emergence of two factions of elected ward and state executives, one faction with loyalty to Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, while the other faction sticks its loyalty to the immediate past state chairman of the party, Dr Ben Nwoye, who is also seeking his re-election.
The Authority checks revealed that in as much as Dr Nwoye is parading himself as the sole candidate of the party based on the acclaimed endorsement of members of the State working committee (SWC) by the 17 local government chairmen of the party in Enugu State, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, a former commissioner of lands in Enugu State during ex-Governor Chimaroke Nnamani regime has indicated interest in the contest.
Deacon Ogbodo told ‘The Authority’ that he bought and filled and filed his forms, therefore, the claims that Dr Nwoye is the only candidate in the race is false.
It was gathered that Deacon Ogbodo is also enjoying the support of many stakeholders of the party in the state. He hails from Enugu South Local Government Area, where both Chief Jim Nwobodo and Senator Ken Nnamani, the king makers of Enugu APC come from.
Meanwhile, Deacon Okey Ogbodo’s interest in the race has put him at daggers drawn with Dr Ben Nwoye.
Nwoye said that Ogbodo is not a registered member of APC and obtained his membership fraudulently by superimposing his name against another name in his ward register, therefore, he will invite law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute him.
But in his response, Ogbodo said that Nwoye is afraid of his pedigree. Also that he has instituted a court action to bar Nwoye from occupying a reputable position like the state chairman of APC in Enugu State. Ogbodo insists that he is a bonafide registered member of APC, having registered in his ward.
“I am a member of APC, registered in Amechi- Uwani ward 2 of Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State”, he said.
