Soldiers sack police station over killing of personnel in Rivers

Soldiers suspected to come from 6 Division Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt on Thursday, took over the Rumupakani Divisional Police Headquarters on Ada-George, in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State over the alleged killing of their colleague by policemen from the station.

The AUTHORITY gathered that the soldiers stormed the station in search of the police officer who allegedly killed the soldier in the early hours of yesterday around Wimpy by Ada-George junction.

The angry soldiers allegedly stormed the police station, broke in and arrested over eight policemen on duty.

It was also learnt that the soldiers had also opened the police cell and freed those in detention.

Some resident claimed that a police officer shot dead a soldier who was controlling traffic at the junction with a pistol gun.

They said that the slain soldier and his colleagues had alighted from a convoy to make way for their superior who was stocked in the traffic, when the police officer shot him and tried to shoot the second person before the he (the second soldier) brought out his identity card.

The police had conveyed the remains of the murdered soldier in their van and drove to their station before the soldiers led by a senior officer who got the wind of the incident, invaded the station, and arrested the officers on duty.

The crisis which lasted for hours caused heavy traffic along the Ada-George, linking Ikwerre Road, Rumuola road, as commuters got stranded on the road.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, who confirmed the incident, said that the comand was aware of the development and normalcy hadreturned to the area.

Omoni said that the Commissioner of Police, Zaki Ahmed, had invited the parties involved in the incident for a peace meeting.
