There is uneasy calm in the FCT as the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) holds its congress tomorrow, The AUTHORITY gathered that there is greater unease within the party ahead of the congress.
This followed the opposition of some party executives and members to return the present state chairman, Abdulmalik Usman through affirmation at Saturday’s congress for another period of four years.
The fireworks is generating anxiety as two camps have emerged within the party following the entrance of FCT Legal Adviser, Yakubu Haruna, who was prevailed upon last time to step down for the present chairman.
In a meeting summoned by the FCT Minister, Muhammed Bello on Wednesday with the six area council chairmen, an inside source said, the minister advised the chairmen to “go and endorse the serving APC chairman” Abdulmalik.
But the high ranging source told The AUTHORITY after the meeting that, the Chairmen are not pleased with the minister’s stance on the matter,” there won’t be fairness if there is no election. It is the election that will end marginalisation.”
A faction allegedly coordinated by Zakari Angulu Dobi, who represents Abuja South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives is kicking against the adoption of Abdullahi Usman, rooting for the current Legal Adviser, Haruna.
For AMAC and Gwagwalada, Usman remains the best option for them which some of them confided in The AUTHORITY said, “he should be affirmed like the ward and local government executives.”
But in Abaji council, the Legal Adviser is their choice for the chairmanship position while Kwali, Kuje and Bwari area councils, some are queuing behind Haruna, others are backing Usman.
In a meeting held on Wednesday at the APC state secretariat, most of the ward chairmen in attendance endorsed affirmation of the present chairman.
Responding to a question vie telephone, Vice Chairman, Karu ward, John Aminu Saminaka said there was the need to continue with the chairman. Mahmud Lawal, who spoke for Orozo and Kabusa, declared that Usman remained the only option they have.
Though there was another tense meeting of local government party chairmen ongoing on Thursday as at the time of filling this report. But inside source through telephone confirmed that, “except with the intervention of the Minister, the chairman can’t scale through on Saturday.
“So far the minister is going to meet with Zakari Angulu today, later again some staunch members of the party will also meet at the party secretariat,” said the source.
However, the initial venue of the congress scheduled in Gwagwalada has been rescheduled to take place at the International Conference Centre (ICC) for security reasons.
