The Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, has put in place a scholarship scheme for students from poor parental background to acquire university education.
Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Christian Anieke, made this known over the weekend during the commissioning of an ultra modern administrative building housing the scheme known as ‘Godfrey Okoye University Scholarship Trust Fund.
He said about 50 students are already enjoying the scheme courtesy of a Swiss- based firm, adding that the University came up with the idea as a way of assisting intelligent students from poor parental background attain intellectual heights.
Anieke said the Godfrey Okoye University Education Trust Fund aims at sourcing funds from both local and international agencies to alleviate the pains of Nigerian university students who are financially handicapped in attaining higher education.
The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, who is the chairman, Board of Trustees of the Fund, commended the initiative as a good one and pleaded with government and well placed Nigerians to assist in training children of the poor.
According to the monarch, good education and health care are the most basic needs desired by every Nigerian youth, stressing that the cost of acquiring qualitative education is not cheap.
On his part, the Director of Development and Legacy Projects of the university, Mr. Ozoilo Fredrick, said intending beneficiaries of the scheme need to pass the scholarship exam and interview to ascertain their financial status o as well as academic prowess.
Ozoilo, however, said special consideration would be given to final year students who for one reason or the other lost their sponsors.
