Adamawa APC congress: Nyako, Lawal, Marwa, Ribadu, others mull options

May 24th, 2018

The just concluded All Progressives Congress (APC) Congresses from Wards to State level has handed the structure of the party to Governor Jubrilla Bindow, leaving other stakeholders like former Governor Murtala Nyako, former SGF, Babachir David Lawal, Muhammed Buba Marwa, Nuhu Ribado to cry foul over alleged conspiracy against them. In this report, Correspondent, AUSTIN AJAYI, writes on the on the politics that schemed the once strong men of Adamawa politics out of the bidding.

With the recently conducted APC Ward, Local Government and State congresses in Adamawa State, the Governor, Jubilla Bindow, has stamped his authority and control of the party’s structure ahead of his second term bid as Governor in 2019.

This has however halted the ambitions of other stakeholders and APC big wigs like former Governor Murtala Nyako, his son, Senator Aziz Nyako, former SGF. Babachir David Lawal, former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu, Muhammaed Buba Marwa and many others, who fought hard to use the congresses to re-launch their political fame ahead of the upcoming elections.

After been shut out in the congresses, the group mobilized to hold a parallel state congress, even as the Governor and his team went ahead to return all members of the former State Executive Committee in a congress that was monitored by the NWC approved State congress committee and INEC officials

The Governor’s group, who believed in the continuity of the Ibrahim Billia led SEC of the party, no doubt with intents to ensure the return of Governor Bindow as the party’s standard bearer in the 2019 governorship election, paraded the likes of SGF, Boss Mustapha, the North East Vice Chairman of the party, Salisu Mustapha, Ibrahim Bilal, Sen. Binta Masi Garba ,the eight serving members at the House of Representative, the 24 lawmakers of the House of Assembly, Commissioners , Chairmen of various LGAs and their ward Councillors, elder statesmen and stakeholders like Jonathan Zwingina, Gen Aliyu Kama, former Acting Gov. James Barka.

Others are Alhaji Umar Duhu, Barr Ali Gulak, Felix Tangwani, Medan Peter, Sen Ahmed Barata, who battle ready to be combatants foot soldiers for Bindow come 2019.

On the other group are former Secretary of the Federal Government, Babachir David Lawal , former Gov. Murtala Nyako, Sen Aziz Nyako, Senator Moallayidi, former governorship candidates, Gen Buba Marwa Rtd, Marcus Gunduri, Nuhu Ribadu, some serving members in Adamawa state House of Assembly, the current Chairman of Gombi LGA and the 10 Ward Councillors, suspended Chairman of Yola North LGA and his 11 Ward Councillors, Daniel Bwala, Yaya Hamanjulde, former Speaker, Hassan Turaki.

The parallel congresses have no doubt brought a sharp division in Adamawa APC, leaving the party’s national leadership with a great task as one faction must be recognized ahead of its upcoming national convention in June.

Stakeholders have warned that this is one decision that could bring APC to an end in Adamawa, as both camps have continued to issue threats of possible actions that could threaten the party’s fortunes in 2019

The Bindow camp however seems to have the advantage of getting the party’s NWC recognizing its sanctity and acceptability.

Speaking to newsmen in Yola after the congress, the SGF, Boss Mustapha, said the congress was held and in an orderly manner.

According to him:” I’m a party man and a grass root politician, doing just what my party instructed me to do.”

Also, Salihu Mustapha, the North East Vice Chairman, who is an indigene of the state while casting his votes during the last State congress, opined that he has been delegated by the party to make sure the congresses went well and in line with the party constitution

”I thank God the congress is peaceful and as a delegate from the national office of our party I can say that my observations are just to say the congresses are really free and fair to all party loyalist.” Salihu Said.

Bindow’s group is undoubtably the group that is having the national recognition of the party.

However, it is an indisputable fact that the struggles of every politicians is for his or her interest to be protected or covered, when there is less than that one will be seeing uproars of grievances coming from those feeling displaced or not carrying along within the scheme of things.

Many also believe that the Babachir led faction is strong because at the national caucus of the party, both Babachir, Murtala Nyako are partly founding members of the party and they have a very strong alliance with APC leaders like Tinubu, President Buhari, Adams Oshiomule’s who are also founding members of the APC, and as such their struggles can never be consider a struggle in total futility.

Possible defection looms

There is no doubt that the drama is breeding up enmities and sharp division that could breakup of the party in the state, as reconciliation seems not to be in sight as the 2019 election approaches.

Analyst also believe that reconciling the two factions could be an impossible task as both Nyako and Babchir are greatly embittered and will never stoop low to join hands with the Bindow’s group to form another four years of APC leadership in the State.

Senator Abdul Aziz Nyako, warned that the group as well as the nPDP bloc in Adamawa State could seek other options.

The Senator said in an interview that if they could be maltreated at the local, State level, coupled with their group’s treatment at the national level, they have no point remaining in the party that they toiled and sweated to sustain.

He boasted that the group would defect to another party to form a government of the people in the state.

It was also gathered that the group has already set up their structure under the leadership of Comrade Dimas Ezra, in preparation for their threat to defect to another party, where they will challenge the popularity of Governor Jubrilla Bindow.
