ODOGWU EMEKA ODOGWU reports that some founding fathers and retirees of the Accounting Department of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area, Anambra state were honoured with meritorious service Awards for their various roles in laying a solid foundation for the department.
Among those honoured were two former rectors that rose to the pinnacle from the Department of Accounting, Professors Eugene Nwadialor and Ugochukwu Nzewi as well as Igwe Chika Uchime of Ufuma community who was one of the pioneer lecturers in the Department. Others were Sir Goddy Ochuba and Dr Ozoh Emmanuel.
The event which took place at the Mass Communication Complex of the Polytechnic had the Acting Rector of the Institution, Dr Izuchukwu Onu describing the event as remarkable.
Dr Onu stressed the need for the celebration of those who have contributed immensely to the growth of the society even as he maintained that the Accountancy Department of the Polytechnic has always been a pace setter. He called on other departments to emulate them.
Head of Department of Accounting, Mr Chikwelu Mbonu informed that the department started in 1981 even as he described the awardees as its pioneer lecturers and Department heads who contributed immensely in making it what it is today.
One of the products of the department, Sir Izuchukwu Nwankwo described Accounting as very vital to entrepreneurship. He announced a ten year endowment fund for the best student in Accounting in Ordinary National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) respectively at the tune of Two Hundred thousand naira annually in honour of a former Rector of the Institution, Prof Ugochukwu Nzewi.
Ichie Sir Izuchukwu Nwabueze Nwankwo, Chinemeze who instituted a Two Million (N2 M) Scholarship award known as Prof Nzewi Award, named after Prof Ugochukwu Nzewi, former Rector , Federal Polytechnic Oko and HOD Accounting Department of the Polytechnic was overwhelmed alongside other awardees. The scholarship is to run for ten (10) years with two hundred thousand naira (N200,000) annually.
Chairman of the Planning Committee and a Lecturer in the department, Mr Emmanuel Ezenwafor informed that they were prompted to organize the event as a way to reward the good work of their pioneer lecturers even as he expressed their determination to sustain the programme.
