The FCT Administration, in collaboration with Julius Berger PLC have concluded arrangements to immediately commence reconstruction of the moribund Berger Junction Recreation Park and restore it to its former beauty.
Coordinator, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), Umar Shuaibu made this disclosure last week when he led members of the Ministerial Joint Taskforce, Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), Parks and Recreation, and the Department of Development Control, among others to sanitise the area.
Speaking to journalists at the end of the exercise, Shuaibu recalled that the area was given to Berger in 2008 to build a recreation centre, which they did, but unlike the Millennium Park, which is usually properly maintained by Salini, the Berger Park was left unattended to.
He regretted that the area has been taken over by hoodlums, miscreants, drug peddlers, causing trouble and traffic congestion as well as environmental degradation.
He said following this challenge, the FCT Minister has invited Julius Berger to return to the park and deliver on their corporate social responsibility.
Shuiabu, also took time out to address drivers who have turned the place ti an illegal park, urging them to restrict their activities to only approved bus stops and motor parks.
On his part, Director, AEPB, Baba Shehu Lawan warned: “we don’t want night markets around this area; and we also do not want book sellers here; it is only newspaper vendors that are allowed to sell here on the road shoulders.”
Chairman of drivers’ union, Mr. Peter Ughamadu promised to take the information to his members for compliance.
