From Anthony Nwachukwu, Lagos
The ongoing campaign against energy theft paid off for Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) on Monday as its officials were said to have caught red-handed a hotel within the network in Lagos alleged to have by-passed the meter.
In a statement, the General Manager, Corporate Communications, Mr. Godwin Idemudia, said the owner of the guest house located in the Sururele area of the state had denied the company’s officials on routine inspection duty entry into the hotel during their first visit.
According to Idemudia, this triggered suspicion of unwholesome practices in the hotel and prompted another surprise visit, during which they established that the three meters in the hotel had been by-passed.
He disclosed that the Disco had installed three pre-paid meters at the hotel following the owner’s complaints over estimated billing, but that after being caught in the act, he resorted to blackmail and subversive acts to incite the public against the company.
Insisting that the company would bring to book, in accordance with the law, perpetrators of energy theft including meter by-pass, Idemudia said it was unfortunate that a customer that got prompt response after his complaints would turn round to short-change the company through such criminal act.
He regretted that corporate bodies and business concerns that should be role models in global best practices and ethical conduct now shun integrity by engaging in criminal acts.
