A 12-year-old Basis 6 female pupil of Anuli Community School, Ezenifite, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, Miss Okonkwo Amala, has disclosed that the installation of water and toilet facilities in her school have restored her dignity.
She disclosed this in an interview with The AUTHORITY, when a team of Journalists visited the school.
The water and toilet projects were co-funded by the European Union (EU) and Anambra state government in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The EU/UNICEF paid 70 per cent of the cost of the project while the Anambra state government paid 30 per cent.
Responding to questions from our Correspondent, Miss Okonkwo Amala, said: “Before we got this water here, I always bring water from home for my drinking.
“ Most times, if I want to go to the toilet I find it difficult because how to clean up myself was very challenging.
“Also, as a girl, I need to wash myself very well, but most times due to lack of water I cannot do so. With this water and toilet here, I feel good and big because I can wash myself any time.”
Also speaking, the Head Mistress of the school, Mrs Francisca Onyebuchi, disclosed that prior to the installation of the water and the toilet facilities, many pupils fall ill regularly.
She, however, said that with the installation of the facilities, the situation has since changed and the rate of regular absenteeism from school has reduced drastically.
“Before the construction of the water facility for us, most of our school pupils were regularly complaining of stomach pain. Cholera and Diarrhea were so frequent among our pupils, but since the project was installed all the common diseases among the children have stopped.
“The rate of absenteeism from school has reduced drastically because we don’t notice any sickness among the pupils again. This is because the children wash their hands regularly with water and soap or ash after visiting the toilet. “
