The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Ogbomoso Zone, has petitioned the Oyo State House of Assembly over alleged irregularities in the appointment of some principal officers for schools in the zone.
The move has prompted the Assembly to launch an investigation into such appointments which the teachers allegedly blamed on the Ogbomoso zonal Head of Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mr. Olufemi Olanihun.
The investigation followed the Assembly’s consideration of the petition, which raised various allegations of undue favouritism, unethical and unprofessional practices.
As read out by Clerk of the Assembly, Mr Paul Bankole, during a plenary, the petition said Olanihun’s unjust favouritism in appointments had resulted in a phenomenon where senior teachers were made to serve under the administration of their juniors.
The petition signed by Secretary, Ogbomoso zone of the NUT, Mrs. Abiola Enoma, as well as the chairmen, secretaries and treasurers of five branches of the NUT in the zone, further accused Olanihun for issuing post-dated letter of appointments to “unmerited” vice principals up to October 2018, among others.
Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Olagunju Ojo, consequently appointed Majority Leader, Honourable Kehinde Subair to head an ad-hoc committee to investigate the allegations against Olanihun and report their findings to the Assembly in two weeks time.
