Incessant killing of security personnel on official duty

July 5th, 2018

The ambush and killing of seven policemen while on official duty on 2nd July, 2018 by armed robbers/bandits at Galadimawa roundabout in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has once again thrown up issues of grave concern about the security and welfare of security personnel in the country.
The report disclosed that the bandits waylaid the policemen, shot them at point-blank range and disappeared with the official riffle assigned to them. Sometime ago, at about the end of January, this year, at Ugiagbe Street, off First Ugbor Road, in the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, a Nigerian Army officer in the rank of a Major, Afisatu Ajuya, was allegedly murdered by her security guard and eight other suspects. The Army Major had reportedly returned from a journey at about 9.30pm on that fateful day when her guard, who offered to assist her offload her luggage from the vehicle, turned around and conspired with other persons and killed her.
Apart from this incident, bandits had on or around March 21st, laid ambush on a special detachment of troops sent to the Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State and killed 11 soldiers, wounding three. The soldiers were in the community to provide security for expatriates and other persons working on a new road linking Zamfara with Kaduna State through Dansadau-Dangulbi and Birnin Gwari.
Also in 2013, a cult group named “Ombatse” allegedly snuffed the life out of over 55 police officers and 10 operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS). It was reported that the security operatives were lured into a cruel ambush, dispossessed of their weapons, brutally murdered, and then burnt into ash.
According to reports, the deceased were on a mission to Asakio village to disrupt a planned oath ceremony of the cult group, destroy the shrine, which houses the shrine of Ombatse cult, a deity of the Eggon people, in Nasarawa State and to arrest its spiritual leader. They never did; they paid the supreme price.
Such gruelling stories are a legion. From the North East to the South East; from North West to South West; from North Central to South South geo-political zones, hardly would a month pass without the gory story of cold blooded murder of security operatives. Engaging security personnel on official assignment in such Gestapo manner are almost becoming recurring but most unfortunate incident in the country.
If the people accused of carrying out such dastardly act are not terrorists like the Boko Haram, they could be said to be herdsmen, armed robbers, cult members or some other miscreants. In fact, news of suck killings are dwarfing the ear waves of people in the society, sending shivers down the spine of people in positions of authority and worse still, the ordinary people.
There is no doubt that people who carry out such dastardly acts do so under some form of devilish influence. Otherwise, how could one explain the cold-blooded murder of officers who are on official assignment, to entrench peace and order in the society? How could one explain the dastardly murder of men and women whose primary responsibility it is to secure the lives and property of other citizens?
It is the general feeling that the activities of some officers in the nation’s security architecture, needs to be brought to urgent check, but mowing down people on public assignments without qualms are that should be immediately halted. It once again buttresses the need for thorough investigation of public complaints against the nation’s security operatives with a view to correcting negative actions and misperceptions.
The need to fine lasting solutions to whatever that must have been propelling people to killing our security personnel have become more urgent than ever before. Cutting down the life of our security personnel in such dastardly manner, no matter the circumstances, are issues which the Federal Government must resolve quickly. Otherwise how could one explain that our environment is conducive for investment? Without improving on the economic fortunes of the nation, how could the country cater for its teeming population and become a prosperous nation? How could the country and country men and women exert dignity in the comity of nations?
Killing any member of our security personnel is an attack on the nation. It is a declaration of war. But, where the country simply engages in rhetoric or the now famous ‘condemnation’ of such barbaric acts, without corresponding immediate action at stopping such, have consequential negative implications. Putting up laid-back attitude on such nefarious acts not just negative the psyche of the immediate families of the victims, but bring devastation of unimaginable proportion on the entire nation.
Government must immediately halt growing youth unemployment. We must face the stark reality that allowing our youths stay jobless at homes breeds insecurity. There is also the need to reorientate our security personnel. Their professional conduct are less than satisfactory. The shameless collection of bribes at road blocks and at our police stations should be of serious concern to the headship of the security architecture. Nothing breeds discontent like injustice and we at The AUTHRITY insist that without justice, equity and fair play, such murderous tendencies are bound to continue and such remain ill wind that blows none any good.
