NPS arrests suspect for trying to smuggle cannabis into Enugu prison

The Arms Squad of the Nigeria Prison Service (NPS), Enugu State Command, has arrested a man, Ifejika Agozie, for trying to smuggle a substance suspected to be cannabis into Enugu Maximum prison.

In a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Command, Mr Monday Chukwuemeka, on yesterday, Agozie was caught with the illegal substance at about 11:00 a.m, during prison visitation by relatives of inmates on Sunday.

“The suspect carefully concealed the illegal substance among the items he had brought to give a relative currently in custody.

“The suspect wanted to escape on noticing that the substance had been detected during routine check of visitors at the prisons entrance.

“However, he was unlucky as our gallant Armed Squad on duty swung to action and apprehended him,” it said.

Chukwuemeka said the suspect had been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for investigation.

Meanwhile, the Controller of Prisons, Enugu State Command, Mr Ogbodo Ndubuisi, has warned intending visitors to the prison to desist from engaging in trafficking of prohibited items.

Ndubuisi said such acts not only jeopardised the reformation of prisoners but also posed great security threats to the society.
