Kidnappers hijack 18-seater bus in Rivers

A commercial bus with 18 passengers has been hijacked and diverted by suspected kidnappers into a forest around Omurelu-Elele axis on Owerri-Port Harcourt Road in Rivers State.

The AUTHORITY gathered that the bus was travelling from Owerri, Imo State, to Port Harcourt, when they were ambushed by armed men.

However, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igwe in charge of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit, in Rivers, who confirmed the development to journalists, said that efforts were on to rescue the kidnapped victims unhurt with his team leading the operation.

He said that the incident occurred at 10pm on Wednesday.

Igwe disclosed that the dead body of a Catholic Priest, who was kidnapped two weeks ago has been recovered after the kidnappers, believed to have collected ransom from the family of the victim, killed him.

Meanwhile, a source from Omurelu disclosed that there was mass arrest in community, following the latest incident.
