Bandits have attacked a police patrol van attached to “C Division” in Delta State and killed one of the five officers in the vehicle.
The hoodlums also injured another reported to be in a critical condition while the remaining three fled the scene.
The incident occurred at Cable Point area of Asaba, the state capital.
The hoodlums, allegedly ambushed the policemen’s van at about 8:30pm, used machetes and other dangerous weapons on the police officers and took away two AK 47 purportedly abandoned by the fleeing policemen.
An eyewitness claimed two of the policemen had severe machete cuts from the hoodlums suspected to be herdsmen.
It was learnt that the late officer died in the hospital from excessive blood lost.
The Delta State Police Commissioner, Mr. Muhammad Mustafa, who confirmed the incident, said that some suspects had been arrested by the police in connection with the incidents.
This latest attack brings to three the ambush on police patrol teams by gunmen in two months in Asaba and its environs.
Two months ago, two AK 47 rifles were reportedly taken away in a similar attack at Isse-Asagba and another at a police checkpoint in Okwe quarters.
