MAURICE OKAFOR writes that the struggle for the ownership of an Enugu based socio cultural organization known as ‘Enugu West Peoples Assembly [EPWA] with focus on the socio economic development and empowerment of the people of Enugu West senatorial district is generating tension in the state

In recent times, two parallel groups of the association at different occasions were umpires of political alignment activities of the people of zone, ahead of 2019 General elections, which were adequately reported in the media.

The two parallel groups are led by Hon Paul Anikwe, a former member of the Enugu state house of assembly who represented Udi North constituency and Engr. Obed Eneh, an Enugu based successful business man.

Expressing his distraught to the existence of the parallel group Engr. Obed Eneh, told THE AUTHORITY’ SOUTH EAST VOICE that he will sue Hon Paul Anikwe and his cohorts if they continue to claim the leadership of EPWA henceforth.

Eneh who produced a Corporate Affairs certificate to drive down authenticity of his claim said “Enugu West Peoples Assembly as far as I am concerned is one, it is a pressure group. Its only one and if anybody is answering chairman other than me as we saw in the newspaper, the person should within 48 hours retract it or we the EWPA will sue him because we know who our chairman is.

“I became chairman since the 26th of March 2018 when it was registered. It was registered as a pressure group to give our support to whomever we wish to. We’ve done a lot of charity works in Enugu West such as in the area of building hospital to our people, infrastructure development and in training our youths. We don’t know some other persons are claiming the group but we are saying he must refute it within 48 hours.”

But in a swift reaction when contacted Anikwe, said his group adequately registered EPWA in 2012,comprising of prominent personalities like the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu and the Deputy Governor of Enugu state, Hon Mrs Cecelia Ezeilo, among others.

Hon. Paul Anikwe stated, “Enugu West Peoples Assembly is a non-partisan association, a development driven association socio-cultural organization for the entire Enugu West. Now we have projects. We changed from Enugu West Peoples Forum to Enugu West Peoples Assembly in October 15 2017. The Governor was there and he donated N1 billion to us. It is not an APC or PDP affair, its a non-partisan socio-cultural organization.

“We started in 2012. How can we not be registered and the Deputy Senate President is there, the Deputy Governor is there, every other person in Enugu West are there. We have a video tape of all the parliamentary sittings we have had. The last one was held in Ezeagu local government, the next one will be in Aninri.

“I leave you to decide if I am the authentic Chairman of Enugu West Peoples Assembly or not. I was in the Enugu state House of Assembly as an Honorable member for eight years. If you come back again I will show you our registration certificate. We have identity cards for our members.”
