Former President Olusegun Obasanjo insisted that Nigeria needs a President who is knowledgeable in economic matters to make meaningful progress.
Obasanjo declared on Tuesday in Lagos that only a President versatile on the economy can take Nigeria out of the current development challenges and mismanagement of national resources
Citing what the late German Chancellor, Helmut Schmidt, one of his international friends told him during a discussion about African countries, the former president asserted that a President with poor knowledge of the economy cannot make wise business decisions and meet the needs of his people.
According to him, even Jesus Christ understood economy hence he was able to make enduring decisions and meet humanity’s expectations.
He spoke in Lagos at this year’s edition of Foursquare Gospel Church annual public lecture held at the church’s national headquarters in Yaba.
Obasanjo chaired the lecture with the theme: “The trying triangle of the economy, faith and politics – Looking through the eye of the needle,” which was delivered by the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Rev. Fr. Matthew Hassan Kukah.
He said that even if Kukah was right in his description of politics as a game, politics must be the most serious game created by man.
He said he agreed with Kukah that even Jesus Christ had a good knowledge of the economy.
