Onu: FG committed to improve energy mix for industrialization

The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu says the Federal Government is determined to increase Nigeria’s energy mix in its quest to provide energy needed for the country’s industrialization.

The Minister who spoke in Abuja on Wednesday when he received the Secretary General of the International Energy Charter, Ambassador Urban Rusnak said more power is needed to take Nigeria away from resource based economy to an economy driven by innovation and technology.

Onu said government is working towards increasing renewable energy sources in the country, noting that most rural communities are being targeted with off grid projects.

The Minister stressed that more electricity is needed to process and add value to the country’s raw products before export to ensure economic diversification and wealth creation.

He assured the International Energy Charter of Nigeria’s readiness to work with the global body to ensure energy efficiency and sufficiency in the country.

According to him, “We are working very hard as a nation to attain energy sufficiency in Nigeria because we are moving our economy away from being a resource based economy to an economy that is knowledge based and innovation driven.

“For us to achieve that we need to rapidly industrialise. We have to add value to many of the raw materials that are available in the country and this definitely will require a lot of energy”, he explained.

Earlier, Mr. Rusnak pledge the support of the Charter to ensure that Nigeria attain energy efficiency and sufficiency.

Rusnak who presented a copy of Nigeria Energy Investment Risk Assessment report to the minister, said the charter has signed an MoU with the Nigeria Energy Commission on wide areas of cooperation.
