From Chidi Asonye, Aba
A security expert in Abia State, Elder Chukwunazom Obi, has disclosed that his dog institute has complemented the efforts of the state government in its fight against rabies infection.
Created and coordinated annually by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC), World Rabies Day focuses on rabies endemic countries to increase community awareness of the disease and its prevention.
The security expert who spoke with The AUTHORITY in Aba as part of the activities marking the 2018 World Rabies Day, Elder Obi, the Chairman, Trustlink Ventures (Nig) Ltd in affiliation with Tex American Investigative and Security services Inc, said since the institute joined in the campaign against rabies infection six years ago, “we have volunteered complementary rabies vaccines to all and sundry, that, has encouraged people to ensure that their dogs are vaccinated”.
Elder Obi who insisted that the war against rabies infection has been won to a large extent in the state and Nigeria in general said, “we have been creating awareness, carrying out rallies and providing free vaccination, which has
made a lot of impact in the Abia environment. We have consistently embarked on wide publicity, to make people actually understand why they should have a pet or a guard dog and have such vaccinated properly”.
He revealed that the institute has added another feather, as it now wears a mini-zoo outlook, absorbing animals and birds like ostriches, peacocks, geese, monkeys etc.
Obi who also said that the institute has grown past the skeletal stage, said, “Secondary school students do visit the institute for excursion and tertiary students studying veterinary medicine, animal husbandry and agricultural science come here for
industrial attachment. We have a research center and veterinary clinic here.
“We have an expert, the resident veterinary doctor here. Researches are carried out here too and as part of our social responsibility, we leave our institute wide open for secondary school students to come and widen their knowledge”, he disclosed.
