The Nasarawa State governorship candidate under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Engr. Abdullahi Sule, has vowed to resolve once and for all, the lingering crisis between Bassa and Egburra ethnic groups in Toto Local Government Area of the State.
It would be recalled that the crisis between the two ethnic groups have been lingering since many years ago.
The crisis has claimed hundreds of innocent lives and property worth millions of naira destroyed in the area. It has led to the displacement of people from the Bassa ethnic group who are now forced to live in different parts of the state including neigbouring Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The age-long crisis recently allegedly led to the kidnap of one of the Bassa elder statesman, Pa Tukura. Till date his where-about is not known.
Speaking when Bassa community from Toto local government area paid him a solidarity visit in his country home in Gudi, the APC governorship candidate, said that if elected, he would employ diplomacy in resolving the Bassa/Egburra ethnic crisis.
He, therefore, called on all residents of Toto local government area to embrace peace as a panacea for development.
He identified the struggle for political and traditional independence as one of the problems bedeviling the area and assured the Bassa community that, if elected, one of his topmost priority would be to amicably resolve the crisis.
The APC governorship candidate sympathized with the Bassa people who were still struggling for the actualization of their TURUNKU chiefdom created over 20 years ago.
Engineer Sule however, regretted the loss of lives and property in the area due to incessant crisis.
According to Engr. Sule, the Bassa people are industrious who largely depend on farming as their main occupation, he, however, lamented that the recurring crisis in the area was destroying their craftsmanship.
He noted that investors the world over, stay away from crisis prone areas and therefore, vowed to find lasting solution to the crisis so as to attract investors to the area.
The governorship candidate called on the warring communities to put down their weapons of destruction and embrace dialogue for peace to return to the area.
He assured the Bassa community that his style of leadership would involve frequent engagement with communities leaders in the area towards amicable resolution of the Toto crisis.
The APC governorship candidate applauded the Bassa APC delegates for giving him support during the recently concluded primaries in the state and solicited them to extend their tentacles and draw more support for him in the 2019 general elections.
Earlier, the Spokesman of the Bassa delegation, Alhaji Musa Wodi Mazhaga, said the Bassa community and some members of the APC were in Gudi in solidarity with APC governorship candidate, assuring him that, as it was with the party primaries, the Bassa community would give the APC candidates massive support in the 2019 general elections.
“We have started mobilizing our people towards the needful task of delivering all APC candidates in the 2019 elections” said Mazhaga
Alhaji Mazhaga appealed to A.A. Sule to add his voice in appealing to Governor Umaru Tanko Al-makura to actualize the Turunku chiefdom before leaving office in 2019.
He said among the major tribes in the state, the Bassa community remains the only tribe without a paramount ruler.
The community spokesman also made a case for some key appointments for the Bassa people.
