The leadership of the Igbo apex socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, says it will meet very soon to decide the way forward for the Igbo nation, as regards the candidates of the parties with ‘restructuring agenda’ of which it would advise Ndigbo to support in the 2019 presidential election.
The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Mr Chuks Ibegbu and Chief Emeka Attamah, the Special assistant on Media to President General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo,Chief John Nnia Nwodo, dropped this hints at a media briefing to unveil the achievements of the present leadership of the organization under Chief Nwodo in the past two years.
Their joint press statement states, ‘For the 2019 Elections, Ohanaeze has been canvassing for Ndigbo to identify with candidates that are ready to restructure Nigeria. We shall stand on that and in the next few days, we shall meet to take a holistic position on 2019’.
They debunked speculations that Ohanaeze Ndigbo had already endorsed Alhaji Atiku/Mr Peter Obi presidential ticket some months ago, at a public function held at Nike lake hotel Enugu, stressing that the Nike lake event was not packaged by Ohanaeze Ndigbo but a gathering of Igbo leaders cut across the political class, technocrats, political associates and friends of Alhaji Atiku and Peter Obi.
Ibegbu explained, “It is erroneous to say that we endorsed Atiku. Ohanaeze Ndigbo did not endorse anybody. That meeting at Nike lake Resort was organized by friends of Atiku”.
‘However, due to our peculiar circumstances in the country, We will identify with candidates that will restructure Nigeria if voted into power’.
Reacting further, Chief Emeka Attamah, the Special assistant on Media to Ohanaeze President General, Chief John Nnia Nwodo stressed that Chief Nnia Nwodo coincidentally appeared at the Atiku/Obi event at Nike lake held the same date he returned from his oversea trip and was not part of the packaging. But this time around, the real stand and position of Ohanaeze Ndigbo which is an afterthought of consultations with the ‘IMEOBI’ [inner caucus] regarding to the 2019 elections is what will be made known to the world,in a matter of days.
According to them, the outline of the two years achievement of Ohanaeze Ndigbo under the leadership of Chief Nnia Nwodo which started on January 10, 2016 includes ‘Building bridges with other ethnic nationalities of Nigeria and the restoration of the dignity of the Igbo race in Nigeria and across the globe.
They mentioned the achievements to include,’ The initiation and pursuit of the restructuring of Nigeria,a position that has now become a national mantra. The establishment and promotion of Ohanaeze Ndigbo activities at local, state, national and diaspora levels’.
‘ The diplomatic and deft handling of such explosive issues as the quit notice to Ndigbo by Northern Youths, the pro- Biafra agitation, the Fulani herds.
